Talking about Indian Cricket, there are two unforgettable moments for Indian fans. One is the 1983 world cup and the second one is the 2011 world cup. The great personality around which the 1983 world cup victory revolves is Kapil Dev. Kapil Dev is the captain of the 1983 world cup team which he leads to winning the first world cup for India. Kapil Dev was just 24 when he captained India and is the youngest captain to win a world cup for any team. He was born in Chandigarh on 6 January 1959 and went to D.A.V Public school, Chandigarh for his initial schooling.

Our younger generation only knows that he was the captain of the Indian Team and won the world cup. But, there are way more interesting things to know about him. He was a legendary and one of the greatest All-rounder Batsman of his time. So, here we are back with some unknown facts about Kapil Dev that every cricket lover should know.

1. ‘Kapil Dev’ known as ‘Haryana Hurricane’

Kapil Dev, a legendary former Indian Cricket Player, needs no introduction. But, very few of us know his nickname which he was called during his era. He is called ‘Haryana Hurricane’ by his fans and teammates. The reason being for calling it ‘Haryana Hurricane’ is first because he belongs to Haryana and had played for Haryana in Ranji Trophy. Under his captaincy, Haryana won its first Ranji Trophy title. His extraordinary performance in Ranji Trophy leads him to win the title of ‘Haryana Hurricane’. He didn’t limit this title to only Ranji Trophy, but he also proved his potential in his entire career.

2. Cameo appearances in Bollywood films

Kapil Dev was not only limited to the game of cricket but also performed in Bollywood films like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Aryan: Unbreakable, Stumped, Chain Kulii ki Main Kulii, and Iqbal. He did not play a significant role in any of the movies and just made cameo appearances.

3. Kapil dev never missed a game due to fitness injury

Injury is the most common thing that happens while you are playing professional cricket. Players have to undergo several surgeries and X-rays to heal their injuries. Even some players’ career comes to end because of an injury. You’ll be shocked to know that Kapil Dev never had a single fitness injury in his entire Cricket career. He never missed a single game because of any fitness issue.

4. A writer

Kapil Dev has also written four books that include three autobiographical and one book on Sikhism. Autobiographical books comprise — By God’s Decree which was released in 1985, Cricket My Style in 1987, and Straight from the Heart in 2004.  His latest book titled We, The Sikhs which came out in  2019. 

5. Unbeatable perfomance in Quarter finals of World Cup 1983

We all remember the final match of India vs West Indies in the 1983 World Cup. But the real thrilling story happened in the quarter-final against Zimbabwe. India opted to bat first and India falls down to 17 runs for 5 wickets very soon. Here, Kapil Dev came to bat and scored massive 175 runs for 138 balls. His tremendous batting leads the team to a total of 266/8. In the end, India beats Zimbabwe by 31 runs and all-out them on 235 runs.

6. Awards won by Kapil Dev

Counted as one of the most successful Indian Captain and a cricketer, Kapil Dev was honored with many awards including Arjuna Award (1979-80), Padma Shri (1982), Wisden Cricketer of the year (1983), Padma Bhushan (1991), ICC Cricket Hall of Fame (2010), CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement award (2013), The 25 Greatest Global Living Legends in India by NDTV (2013),  etc.

7. ‘First Genuine bowler’ of Indian Cricket Team

Did you know that Kapil Dev is the ‘first Indian fast bowler’ in the Indian Cricket Team? It was not that there was no fast bowler before Kapil Dev, but the ‘first’ being here is India’s first genuine fast bowler. He leads the Indian Team for long two decades. His bowling records speak themselves about him. He took 434 wickets in 131 matches of his Test Career including 23 five-wicket hauls.

In an interview with WV Raman, he revealed an incident that encourages him for proving his Bowling talent. Once an official asked Kapil ‘What do you do’? Kapil Dev answered that he is a fast bowler in the Indian cricket team. But the official replied that ‘India never had a fast bowler’. Kapil Dev took these lines as disrespect and decided to prove his game on the ground.
