1. How Amul came into existence and contirbuted to White Revolution?

Amul is not an ordinary company like others. There is a very interesting story behind how this brand came into existence. Amul cooperative was registered even before independence ie. 19 December 1946. The main reason behind the establishment of the company is to save dairy farmers from Unfair trade practices and exploitation. At the time, there is a very effective monopoly of ‘Polson’ in the Dairy market and farmers are angered because of Polson’s Unfair trade practice.

In order to respond to the malpractice, farmers approached Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Tribhuvandas K. Patel. Under their leadership, farmers decided to form a cooperative and started selling milk directly to the Bombay Government. Later, in 1949, Dr. Verghese Kurien was appointed as a government employee to manage a dairy. In 1955, the cooperative started calling their products as milk range of ‘Amul’ derived from ‘Amulya’ which means ‘precious’. This is how the company came into existence.

2. Undisputed Market leader

Even after so many years of establishment, Amul is still dominating the whole dairy market. Their market share speaks itself about them. The company has an 85% market share in the Butter market and a 75% share in the Cheese market. The company also enjoys a 26% market share in the packaged milk market. It produces nearly 20% of the World’s total milk production.

Famous Business Jagmohan Dalmiya once sued the Amul company for their controversial poster. The poster said ‘Dalmiya mein Kuch kala hai?’ in connection with the cases of Jagmohan Dalmiya. Later, the court asked Amul company to pay 10% of the sued amount.

The same controversy happened during Satyam Board Scam and the company asked Amul to issue an apology letter.

Amul became the first Indian company to set foot in Rabobank’s Global Top 20 Dairy Companies list in August 2019 and got the 16th position. However, the company dropped two places and ranked 18th in 2021 in the same list. Other than this, the company got World Dairy Innovation Awards 2014, AIMA High-Performance Brand Award-2013, etc.
